Invisalign® Q&A
What are Invisalign® braces?
Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that's based on a series of plastic trays, called aligners, that are virtually invisible while they're being worn. These plastic aligners are custom-made for each patient's mouth, and they work by gently shifting the teeth over time until they arrive in their correct positions. Many patients prefer them to traditional metal braces because they:
Are almost invisible while being worn
Have no sharp wires
Can be removed for eating and when brushing and flossing
Are easy to care for
What kinds of issues can Invisalign® treat?
Invisalign® can treat a variety of alignment issues, including:
Overbites
Underbites
Crossbites
They can't be used in every case, so having a consultation before any type of orthodontic treatment is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and to decide which approach is best for your needs.
What happens during treatment?
Before treatment begins, an impression or plaster cast will be made of your teeth. This cast will be sent to a lab where it will be scanned by a computer. Special software will make a series of 3-D models showing the movements your teeth will need to make to become aligned. Those models will then serve as the basis for your plastic aligners, which will be customized just for you. During treatment, you'll wear each aligner for about two weeks before changing to the next in the series. Treatment typically takes about 18 months more or less.
Are Invisalign® aligners better than traditional braces?
Many patients find Invisalign® to be much more convenient, and they appreciate the fact that the aligners are almost invisible while being worn. However, they're not the ideal choice for every patient, and they are more costly than traditional braces. Having a consultation prior to treatment is the best way to learn about all your options.
